주제 선정 이유

우리나라 명절은 아니지만 전 세계인들이 손꼽아 기다리는 기념일이고 곧 있으면 크리스마스가 다가오기 때문에 다같이 크리스마스 캐롤을 들으며 연말 분위기를 내자는 취지에 주제를 크리스마스 캐롤을 소개하는 것으로 정했다.

크리스마스(영어: Christmas, X-mas)는 한국어로 흔히 성탄절이라고 하며, 라틴어 '그리스도'(라틴어: Christus )와 '모임'(라틴어: massa)에서 온 영어 단어로 프랑스어로 '노엘'(프랑스어: Noel), 독일어로 '바이나흐튼'(독일어: Weihnachten), 스페인어로 '나비다드'(스페인어: Navidad)라고 한다. 기독교에서는 전통적으로 율리우스력의 12월 25일을 기준으로 하여 예수 그리스도의 탄생을 기념하는 날이다.

성탄절이라는 단어는 일반적으로 성스러운 사람의 탄생을 축하하는 명절이라는 의미를 갖지만, 기독교에서는 매년 12월 24일부터 다음 해 1월 6일까지 예수의 탄생을 축하하는 명절로 기념하고 있다. 주로 기독교 문화권의 영향이 강한 나라에서 예수가 태어난 12월 25일을 성탄절이라고 한다.

크리스마스는 라틴어 "그리스도"(Christus)와 "모임"(massa)의 합성어로서, '그리스도 모임' 즉 '그리스도의 탄생을 기념하는 모임'으로 종교적인 예식을 의미한다. 동방 정교회나 개신교에서는 "그리스도의 예배"로 로마 가톨릭교회에서는 "그리스도의 미사"로 번역한다. 이 날은 역사적인 그리스도의 기념일로 율리우스력과 그레고리력의 역법에 따라 날짜 차이가 있기는 하지만, 기록에 따르면 기독교의 초대교회부터 약 1800년 이상 기념해 왔다.

'Χ - mas' 또는 'Χ-mas'는 로마문자의 '엑스(X)'가 아닌 '그리스도'(크리스토스, Χριστός)의 그리스어 첫글자인 그리스문자 '키'(Χ)에 '마스'(mas)를 붙여서 쓴 것이다. 따라서 영어권에서는 관용적으로 '엑스마스'라고 읽기도 하나, 원칙적으로 '크리스마스'로 읽는 것이 맞다.

현재는 기독교 문화권이 강한 지역에서 종교적인 의미를 초월하여 문화적인 행사로 발전하였다. 크리스마스는 기독교 교회에서 부활절과 함께 가장 중요한 축제이자 교회력 절기인데, 전통적으로 교회에서는 크리스마스 전 4주일 동안 예수가 세상에 다시 올 것을 기다리는 대림절(강림절, 대강절)로 지킨다. 대한민국 대통령령 "관공서의 공휴일에 관한 규정"에서의 명칭은 '기독탄신일(基督誕辰日)'이다.
